How To Get To San Marino

If you are travelling around Italy using a rental car, you can easily drive to San Marino. Be aware that there may be toll roads and that you will have to pay for parking in one of the large car parks. It would cost around €8 for the day.

However, Italy’s public transport system is reasonably cheap and largely efficient, so you can reach this charming country using trains and buses.

Although Florence looks geographically relatively close, you would need to catch a train to Bologna, then a connection from Bologna to Rimini. We recommend spending a few days in Bologna as it’s a fantastic city for foodies; Parma and Modena are close by too.

San Marino is part of the Schengen area so, although you cross a border, there is freedom of movement and no passport checks. If you are travelling from outside the EU we recommend taking your passport anyway.

The Rimini San Marino Bus

The easiest way to reach San Marino via public transport is getting a train to Rimini and then catching the bus. The bus journey takes around 50-60 minutes. Here are the details about catching the bus- they are up to date at 2026.

How to Buy Bus Tickets

We decided to pre-book the journey to San Marino but buy our return tickets at the shop as we didn’t know how much time we would spend in the city and wanted some flexibility.

Be prepared for a lot of climbing steep pavements as Mount Titano is very hilly. But take your time as the city is very lovely and a fantastic place to explore. If you wish to go down to the valley below, there is a cable car station.
